Nandalal had a strong affinity for sketching, his subjects being the surrounding environs, people in their everyday life or anything that he found fascinating. In this sketch, he has depicted a group of people reading Japanese letter as the inscription suggest, rendered against the background of a house. This has been executed in bold, rhythmic ink strokes delineating the forms.
