Nandalal had firm belief that for the creation of art an intimate understanding of the nature and its ways is imperative. His smaller sketches are testimony of Nandalal's keenness to observe and his empathy for the environment in which he lived. This sketch was probably made during the artist's visit to the coast of Orissa. Nandalal has made careful observation for his numerous sketches depicting the landscape, seascapes and the local tribes, particularly the Nulia tribes. The sketch is executed with quick and spontaneous brush strokes and is one of many examples of Nandalal's acute observation of his surroundings. The deep perspective and human forms in the above landscape painting is created with simple line formations.
