Nandalal had a strong affinity for sketching, his subjects being the surrounding environs, people in their everyday life or anything that he found fascinating. The above study sketch by the artist is a perceptible representation of a woman kneeling probably for praying, from Sanchi Stupa as suggested in the inscription. The figure is rendered with thick, bold pencil strokes articulating the stance of the woman. The lines are fluid yet firm delineated in calligraphic style adding vigour and rhythm to the composition.
