Nandalal preferred drawing from life, often sketching outdoors with the subject being life, nature studies, landscapes, figure drawings, animals and birds or anything that he found fascinating. In this sketch, Nandalal has rendered an old man sitting under the tree with hukka in his hand. Executed in fluid fine ink strokes delineating the contours of the figure and suggesting the demeanour of the subject.
