Nandalal preferred drawing from life, often sketching outdoors with the subject being life, nature studies, landscapes, figure drawings, animals and birds or anything that he found fascinating. In this sketch, Nandalal has depicted a village scene with a woman standing in the foreground. The sketch has been swiftly executed in loose, coarse pencil defining the contours of the forms and adding vigour and vitality to the composition.
