Album No. 15 (A Dancing Mudra) 7290 Nandalal Bose Pencil on postcard

×
Nandalal's drawings, complete in themselves, were his vivid observations of the characteristics and attributes of subjects chosen from his immediate surroundings. The above sketch by the artist depicts 'Naga Raksha' one of the mythological characters of the Kandyan dance of Sri Lanka. The performer wears a mask that has serpents appearing from his nostrils. Nandalal has rendered the form with thick contouring lines while dark, smudged pencil strokes around the figure convey the fierceness of the character.
