For Nandalal, making instantaneous visual records of anything amusing happening in his surroundings or observing the demeanour and mannerisms of people and observing intently the ways of nature was inspiring and a source of delight. In this pencil drawing of a rat, he has studied the rodent at close quarters. He has rendered on paper, a moment when its senses are heightened, evident in its tense posture and claws.
