Nandalal preferred drawing from life, often sketching outdoors with the subjects being life, nature studies, landscapes, figure drawings and animals. The above illustration by the artist depicts a Chinese painter sketching women carrying pots and walking on the hilly terrain. The composition is rendered with coarse, repetitive pencil strokes delineating the forms and suggesting the demeanour of the subject.
