Nandalal is known to have depicted profusely the environs and surroundings of Santiniketan, where he lived and taught. In this postcard sized sketch, he has rendered a shepherd tugging at his load- bearing horse amidst a rural landscape. Using large curvilinear strokes in the outlines, the figures have been lent solidity and volume, while minimal lines convey expressions of hardship, both human and animal.
