Nandalal sketched fervently, the environs of Santiniketan in Bengal, where he lived and taught and would keenly record aspects of rural life from the region. This sketch, the first in a series of three sketches of hens in the album, depicts a mother hen followed by two younger ones tottering around her. The strokes are quick and smudged, conveying the hurried movement of the birds.
