    Nandalal Bose

A Sketch from Album No. 41 7995 Nandalal Bose Ink & pencil on postcard.

×
This sketch of a donkey grazing is another of Nandalal's animal drawings. Here he explores not only the form but also the emotion of the animal. An empty expression in the eyes and inertia in its body language, as depicted by the artist, convey its emotional state. In his book, 'On Art', Nandalal elaborates on an artistic understanding of anatomy thus, "To acquire right knowledge and perception one should study men and animals when they are on the move or are active : when one can note in action the how and wherefore of the body's muscles, tendons and joints.'
