Nandalal recorded various scenes of nature and everyday life wherever he travelled. This drawing is also one of the works which depicts the streets of Darjeeling. Here, a woman can be seen carrying a child on her back and ascending a flight of stairs that have been rendered with thick brush strokes. He has also, as a template, roughly scribbled the form of the woman in blue colour on the top-right corner; the aim was simply to capture the subject in a brief moment. Most of his sketches are in monochrome but here he has used red and ochre colours to add some detail.
