Nandalal preferred drawing from life, often sketching outdoors with the subject being life, nature studies, landscapes, figure drawings, animals or anything that he found fascinating. In the above painting, Nandalal uses a series of diverse tones and brush strokes to illustrate a rocky landscape. The adept use of the inherent white space and tonal variations of a single black colour showcase Nandalal's prowess in the art of monochromatic painting.
