Nandalal preferred drawing from life, often sketching outdoors with the subjects being life, nature studies, landscapes, figure drawings and animals. In this monochromatic sketch, he has executed a gardener standing holding a stick besides a tree, with the few swift strokes of ink in tonal variation delineating the forms and adding depth in the composition.
