Nandalal preferred drawing from life, often sketching outdoors with the subject being life, nature studies, landscapes, figure drawings and animals. The above monochrome sketch is a study of a woman carrying a child and a portrait sketch of an old woman in profile. The composition is rendered with bold, repetitive, fluid pencil strokes delineating the basic contours of the subjects. In a few, effortless lines, the artist has depicted the demeanour of the subjects.
