Nandalal had a strong affinity for sketching and drawing, often sketching outdoors with the subject being life, nature studies, landscapes, figure drawings and animals. In this line sketch of a rose, as the inscription indicates, Nandalal has studied the flower and its leaf in detail. In his book, 'On Art' he writes, "Nature is life itself and teeming always with infinite variety; it is in her that the artist always renews his experience and finds an unceasing flow of inspiration.
