Nandalal learnt the technique of leaving white negative space around the subject in the painting from East Asian painting traditions. In this representation of a herd of load-bearing donkeys, the idea is to capture the spirit and not simply reproduce the subject. The range of Nandalal's artistic expression is seen in the changing Indian landscapes, his varied images of nature and the portrayal of people and places.
