Nandalal preferred drawing from life, often sketching outdoors with the subjects being life, nature studies, landscapes, figure drawings and animals. The above sketch by the artist depicts a man preparing a stick made of coconut shell as suggested in the inscription along with different parts and their measurements, rendered with coarse, repetitive pencil strokes delineating the forms and suggesting the demeanour of the subject.
