Nandalal had a strong affinity for sketching, his subjects being the surrounding environs, people in their everyday life or anything that he found fascinating. Here he has studied a poor woman sitting on the stairs, carrying her child on her lap. The soft, fluid strokes of the brush delineate the contours of the female body while the small brisk strokes suggest human figures in the background.
