Nandalal had a strong affinity for sketching, his subjects being the surrounding environs, people in their everyday life or anything that he found fascinating. Here he has studied a woman lighting a 'Diya' (an earthen lamp). The fluid handling of the brush and its strong delineation in the calligraphic style defines the fine contours of the slender female body while brisk strokes depict the walls and stairs rendered in the composition.
