Nandalal had a strong affinity for sketching, his subjects being the surrounding environs, people in their everyday life or anything that he found fascinating. In this sketch, he has depicted a flock of hens in a dense forest, executed in fluid, thick strokes of ink, suggesting the counters of her body. He has rendered the trees with the range of strokes in tonal variation that adds depth in the composition.
