Nandalal preferred drawing from life, often sketching outdoors with the subject being life, nature studies, landscapes, figure drawings and animals. In the above sketch the artist has depicted women dancing amidst trees and celebrating an Indian festival Holi as suggested in the inscription. The dancing figures, the trees and the falling leaves in the composition are rendered with thick, bold ink strokes. The lines are fluid yet firm invigorating vigour and dynamism in the composition.
