Nandalal had some knowledge of pre-modern Indian art styles early in his career and with the passage of time, he began to more intensively acquaint himself with its achievements. In this sketch, as the inscription suggests, he has reproduced the forms of the deer from medieval Indian sculpture by studying the works of old masters.
