Nandalal had some knowledge of pre-modern Indian painting styles early in his career and with the passage of time, he began to more intensively acquaint himself with its achievements. In this sketch, as the inscription suggests, he has reproduced this ornamental rendition of the deer from the medieval miniature style of indigenous painting to enrich his artistic vocabulary by studying the works of old masters.
