Nandalal had some knowledge of pre-modern Indian painting styles early in his career and with the passage of time, he began to more intensively acquaint himself with its achievements. In this sketch, as in a previous identical one, he has reproduced the form of the deer from the 17th century murals of the Mattanchery Palace in Cochin by studying the works of old masters.
