×
This painting belongs to a series of monochromatic ink and watercolour paintings inspired by the Sumi-e Japanese technique the artist employed in the last phase of his life. The subject here being 'Deers' executed from his memory and experiences. The collection of his works in NGMA has several of these paintings, where the artist has portrayed the untamed and solitary nature of wild animals, often in a setting that includes a seascape. In the above composition, the figures of the deer are drawn in a naturalistic way. Nandalal has captured the motion of the waves through patterned rhythmic lines, giving the composition a forceful yet serene effect. This painting was purchased from collection of Shri Biswaroop Bose and Smt. Nivedita Bose.
