This painting belongs to a series of monochromatic ink and watercolour paintings inspired by the Sumi-e Japanese technique the artist employed in the last phase of his life. The subject here being 'Elephants' executed from his memory and experiences. The collection of his works in NGMA has several of these paintings, where the artist has portrayed the untamed and cheerful nature of elephants capturing only the contours of the animal's body in a subtle approach. This painting was purchased from the collection of Shri Biswaroop Bose and Smt. Nivedita Bose.
