This painting belongs to a series of monochromatic ink and watercolour paintings inspired by the Sumi-e Japanese technique the artist employed in the last phase of his life. The subject here being 'Wild Animals' executed from his memory and experiences. The collection of his works in the NGMA has several of these paintings, where he depicts solitary animals on hilltops, looking out into the emptiness of the canvas. This painting was purchased from the collection of Shri Biswaroop Bose and Smt. Nivedita Bose, children of Nandalal Bose.
