A BOAT 5926 Nandalal Bose Watercolor on Paper

×
This painting belongs to a series of monochromatic ink and watercolour paintings inspired by the Sumi-e Japanese technique the artist employed in the last phase of his life. The subject here being 'A Boat' executed from his memory and experiences. These compositions were stripped to the bare minimum where only a few strokes of ink were employed to create natural forms in an effortless approach. As K.G. Subramanyan writes of Nandalal's work in the book, 'Vision and Creation', "The art object is not a representation of the natural object, it is a variable equivalent. Its reality lies in its life rhythm and sense of complete authenticity, even when it lacks verisimilitude."
