John M. Rosenfield in the book, 'Rhythms of India: The Art of Nandalal Bose' writes, "Nandalal inserted East Asian- style signatures into many of his paintings. He signed his name vertically, Chinese fashion, and added a seal impression in red ink; the writing in both is in Bengali even though the characters are Chinese in appearance." This painting belongs to a series of monochromatic ink and watercolour paintings inspired by the Sumi- e Japanese technique the artist employed in the last phase of his life. The subject here being the 'Mountains' executed from his memory and experiences. This painting was purchased from the collection of Shri Biswaroop Bose and Smt. Nivedita Bose, children of Nandalal Bose.
