This painting belongs to a series of monochromatic ink and watercolour paintings inspired by the Sumi-e Japanese technique the artist employed in the last phase of his life. The subject here being 'Hills' executed from his memory and experiences. R. Siva Kumar in the book, 'Rhythms of India: The Art of Nandalal Bose' writes, "As he progressed, the surface of paper was transformed into vast spaces of land, water, and sky animated by the barest of of marks evoking swaying grass, trodden sand, rippled water, or flying birds." This painting was purchased from collection of Shri Biswaroop Bose and Smt. Nivedita Bose, children of Nandalal Bose.
