Nandalal preferred drawing from life, often sketching outdoors with the subjects being life, nature studies, landscapes, figure drawings and animals. In the above sketch the artist has depicted a warrior riding a horse and carrying a flag, rendered with linear, coarse pencil strokes articulating the contours of the rider and the horse as it gallops. The quick strokes convey the spontaneity of the sketches.
