Nandalal preferred drawing from life, often sketching outdoors with the subjects being life, nature studies, landscapes, figure drawings and animals. The above painting by the artist has a strong element of fantasy and depicts an angelic figure with an envelope. The winged figure is rendered with linear, fluid pencil strokes articulating the contours and bringing about a corporeality of form and substance. The painting belongs to a series of reproductions that the artist made as he studied the works of European masters.
