Nandalal in his artistic career sketched fervently with either pen or brush, subjects ranging from mythic and religious themes to nature and social realities. In the above watercolour painting the artist has probably depicted the Greek myth of Orpheus. The composition is rendered with fluid brush strokes articulating the palpable form and filled with dabs and dashes of colours to bring about a corporeality of form and substance. The painting belongs to a series of reproductions that the artist made as he studied the works of European masters.
