Nandalal preferred drawing from life, often sketching outdoors with the subjects being life, nature studies, landscapes, figure drawings and animals. The above painting by the artist has a strong element of fantasy and depicts a woman holding an amphora as she floats over clouds. The voluptuous figure is rendered with linear, fluid brush strokes articulating the contours of the woman filled with dabs and dashes of colour, bringing about a corporeality of form and substance.The painting belongs to a series of reproductions that the artist made as he studied the works of European masters.
