Nandalal had a strong affinity for sketching, his subjects being the surrounding environs, people in their everyday life or anything that he found fascinating. In this sketch, he has depicted a man sitting on the staircase, probably meditating under a rock cave. This has been executed in various strokes of pen and ink, capturing the rhythm and pattern of the forms.
