Nandalal had firm belief that for the creation of art an intimate understanding of the nature and its ways is imperative. In this sketch, he has depicted the barren tree of rosewood against the background having shrubs and huts, executed in fluid yet firm, bold ink strokes, adding rhythm and grace to the composition. He has also depicted two men sitting under the tree and two monkeys sitting on its branch, in quick, loose strokes, delineating their basic forms.
