This particular sketch executed with quick strokes is one of many examples of Nandalal's acute observation. He has here depicted from the back, a woman sitting, draped in a sari. The soft, calligraphic lines delineate the contours of the form while shading suggests the folds of the sari and accentuate the light and depth in the image.
