Nandalal preferred drawing from life, often sketching outdoors with the subject being nature studies, landscapes, figure drawings and animals. In this first sketch of a series of six sketches of monkeys in the album, Nandalal studies the the head of a monkey in two different templates. He renders the sketch in quick short strokes and slight shading that define the contours of the forms and bring out the underlying expression of mischief.
