Nandalal was revolutionary in asserting the importance of drawing to the artist's practice of grasping the essence and creative rhythm of the subject. In this first sketch of a series of seven sketches of cattle in the album, Nandalal depicts a small herd of buffaloes along with their young herders. He carefully brings out the nuances of the animal's body with strong outlines, swift strokes and light shading. The smudged strokes depict the playful herders.
