A study sketch by Nandalal depicts a fragment of a decorative panel probably of a concrete structure from Bharhut as suggested in the inscription. The artist has rendered two swans facing in the same direction, separated with a decorative motif and placed in a panel. The forms are rendered with bold, continuous pencil strokes, sparing much detail.
