Nandalal has here studied the posture of a celestial nymph as she sits gracefully, gazing upwards. The artist renders the sketch in dark contouring lines, bringing out the delicacy of her feminine form. This image is reproduced from part of a panel portraying the Bodhisattva Padmapani from cave no.1 of the Ajanta caves. In this particular scene, a Gandharva couple (only the consort shown here) is depicted watching the Bodhisattva from a hill-abode.
