Nandalal has here studied the seated posture of a royal figure, his hands in Dharmachakra mudra (teaching gesture). The sketch has been reproduced from part of the mural that depicts the 'Champeyya Jataka' in cave no. 1 of the Ajanta caves. The figure, quickly rendered with blunt strokes, is the serpent king Champeyya preaching to king Ugrasena of Varanasi about the mysteries of faith.
