Sketch from Sketch Book No.22 - Ajanta Sketches 10970 Nandalal Bose Pencil on paper

Nandalal has here studied the stance of a female figure as she holds a dish in her left hand. The figure's posture portrays a sense of attentiveness, rendered with bold, curvilinear strokes. As the inscription suggests, the drawing has been reproduced from part of the mural that depicts the 'Champeyya Jataka' in cave no.1 of the Ajanta caves. Here, the figure listens carefully as King Champeyya initiates the king of Varanasi, into the mysteries of the faith.
