Sketch from Sketch Book No.22 - Ajanta Sketches 10973 Nandalal Bose Pencil on paper

×
Nandalal has here studied the posture of King Champeyya, rendered in firm repetitive strokes, the strong outlining delineates the figure in a calligraphic manner. This particular scene depicts King Champeyya, the serpent lord seated in his palace, repenting a life of luxury as one strays away from the path of piety. As the inscription suggests, the sketch has been reproduced from part of the mural that depicts the 'Champeyya Jataka' from cave no.1 of the Ajanta caves.
