Sketch from Sketch Book No.22 - Ajanta Sketches 10974 Nandalal Bose Pencil on paper

×
Nandalal has here studied the stance of a mother and child, executed in a quick rendition with swift outlines. This particular scene depicts Sumana (the mother) in a state of despondency, as she grieves at the idea of her husband, King Champeyya renouncing a life of the palace to seek the ultimate 'truth'. As the inscription suggests, the sketch has been reproduced from part of the mural that depicts the 'Champeyya Jataka' in cave no.1 of the Ajanta caves.
