Nandalal has here studied the posture of a richly ornamented figure seated on a throne, sketched in a simple line drawing, defining the contours of the form. The image has been reproduced from part of the mural, 'The birth of the Buddha', from cave no. 2 of the Ajanta caves. This particular part of the mural depicts a royal court with a prince in teaching gesture, identified as the future Buddha.
