Sketch from Sketch Book No.22 - Ajanta Sketches 11023 Nandalal Bose Pencil on paper

×
Nandalal has here studied a standing posture of the Buddha painted on a pillar of cave no.10 of the Ajanta caves. The Buddha stands in 'Abhaya mudra' or the assurance gesture, as he holds up the palm of his right hand and with the left, holds one end of his robe. The artist has also rendered template sketches of the ear and creased drape of the Buddha's toga with repetitive, coarse pencil strokes.
