Nandalal has here executed two basic anatomical studies, reproduced from part of a mural from cave no. 16 of the Ajanta caves. The sketch above depicts a male figure standing with hands resting on a stick for support. The one below is a simple line drawing of a hand suggesting a gesture which is made when one is asking for alms. Both illustrations have been loosely rendered in brisk pencil strokes, spared of any detail.
