    Nandalal Bose

Sketch from Sketch Book No.22 - Ajanta Sketches 11038 Nandalal Bose Pencil on paper

×
Nandalal has here studied the stance of two female figures, probably the attendants of Queen Maya. The women seem to be in conversation as they stand behind the palace pillars, leaning towards each other. The sketch has been rendered in brisk and fluid pencil strokes lending the figures a certain delicacy and grace. As the inscription suggests, the image has been reproduced from part of the mural, 'A Group of Ladies: Birth of the Buddha' in cave no.16 of the Ajanta caves.
